Fic: Doppelganger (5/5)

Title: Doppleganger (5/5)
Author: Tesla
Genre: AU of "Dopplegangland"---where vampire Xander is brought back by the spell. Old School Buffy. This chapter? Not as fun as the others. Or fun in a different way.

During the whole thing with Faith and the sorcerer and the Angelus act, Vamp!Xander was stashed at Giles, apparently chained in his bathtub. He was philosophical about it, as Giles thoughtfully put a portable television set on the toilet tank for him to watch.

Xander was there when Angel came to take dead!Xander back to the Crawford mansion. Dead man Xan was unusually somber. "You guys should have used me, somehow," he told Giles. "No one knows about me being here. You could have used me for some kind of wacky identical cousin hijinks to stop all this."

Giles took a sip of tea. "You speak as though you wish to see the white hats triumph."

The dead boy scowled, picking at one of his cuticles. "This is my town," he said. "Since the vampires didn't win, why should the Mayor get to ascend? You should use me. Let them think---hell, let them know that I'm turned. You could use it somehow." He looked across the room at Angel, who was not standing near Buffy, for once. "In this world, Willow's alive. I'm---he's--- alive. I kind of like that."

Angel nodded. "Yeah," he said, elliptically. "It's good."

Xander almost jumped. Angel was standing, hands on his belt buckle, right beside him, looking---not quite in a friendly way, but a tolerant way, at the other vampire. "Why can't Willow just put a soul in him?"

His pale mirror image smiled at him. "What if that spell sucked yours out of you to put in me? Mine's at the other place."

"What, I'd be a zombie?" Xander asked Giles.

Giles shook his head. "I doubt that, but I don't know if you could ask Willow to try that again...and I don't happen to have any Orbs. Angelus broke all of them he could find."

"Ooh, bad Angel," the other vampire said. "Besides, I know this isn't going to end well. Why should I have a soul and be as miserable as you, you poor sonofabitch?"

"You can be a lot more miserable right now ," Angel said.

"Again with the promises," Dead Xan Walking said. He winked at Xander.

Angel took one of his unnecessary breathes and exhaled through his nose.

::

"I want him to do it," Dead Xan told Xander. "When it's time. Come on, don't give me that look. I don't want my dust on the librarian, and Buffy would lose her nerve and stab me a bunch of times before it---"

Xander shivered.

"Dude, I already died once," the vampire told him. "How long do you think they're gonna keep me around? And, like I said, pig's blood----blecch."

"Why him?" Xander said, unable to stop picking at it. "Why Angel?"

"He won't hurt me," Dead Xan said simply. He put the Spiderman back in the plastic sleeve and set it on the stack.

Xander looked down at the comic book he was holding, and saw that his hands were shaking. "Why wouldn't he?" he asked. His voice shook, too.

Dead Xan cocked his head. "Don't take this the wrong way," he said. "But I sleep with him. He has me chained to his ankle so I don't get away, but he got tired of me bitching about the cold floor. Bastard's actually just a big softy. Snores, too."

Xander dropped the comic and held his head. "No," he said. "I think my brain is going to explode."

"So sometimes I snuggle up to him when he's asleep," Dead Xan said remorselessly, "and it freaks him out when he wakes up. He's in a world of denial, that one."

"You really are evil," Xander said.

"Yeah, and that's why they're going to end me soon," Dead Him said. "Personally, I'd rather go out slammin' than have to just stand there and let Angel stake me. So to speak," he added.

"What?" Angel asked, alarmed, from behind Xander.

"He's so cute. Isn't he cute?" Dead Xan said to Xander.

"No!" Xander said, still horrified at the bed-time imagery.

"I'm not cute," Angel said, a very weird expression---well, weirder than usual---on his face. "But were you serious? You want me---or don't want---" he paused, then started all over again. "You want to---"

"Look," Xander said, and stood up, the comics spilling unheeded out of his lap. "You guys have been talking about this behind my--our--backs. This is sick. "

"He's a vampire," Angel said, in tones very like Wesley Windham-Pryce's.

"So are you!"

"With a soul, " Angel said.

Xander grabbed his jacket and left the Crawford mansion. After a moment, Angel and Dead Xan came pounding after him.

"Wait, dude," the dead Xan called. "There's weird shit going on. The Mayor's trying something and who knows?"

"Okay," Xander said. "Fine."

"We'll walk you to Giles'," Angel said reassuringly. "We'll be careful so no one sees two of you."

On the way to the apartment building, Xander was walking, head down, hands in his pockets, with the dead Xander ghosting behind him. No one would have really thought they were the same, he thought. The vampire version had the leather coat and the leather pants, and the silk shirt; he had longer hair, and he had a loose-limb, confident way of walking that Xander hadn't had since hyena days.

"Something---" Angel muttered, looking around.

Xander felt a hand on his shoulder, as the vampire him moved past him, looking up. He followed his twin's gaze. "Hey, is that---"

There was a ssst sound, and Xander found himself looking up from the middle of a hedge, at the vampire Xander was standing in front of Angel, an arrow sticking out of his back

"Hey," the vampire said, pleased. "Look how that worked out." His legs buckled, and Angel caught him by the upper arms.

"Faith," Xander croaked, but no sound came out.

"Pull it out," the other Xander said to Angel. "It's time." He slipped further down in Angel's grip.

"I can't," Angel said. "It's---" he looked over the dark head at Xander.

Xander blinked. He scrambled up and shoved the arrow all the way through.

There was an explosion of dust, and he and Angel were standing there, staring at each other through it.

::

Things improved, actually, in a weird way. Faith thought she'd killed Xander---him, the alive one, and it made her leave the Mayor's side and go find Giles. She was, apparently, as hysterical as Faith was capable of being. Giles, himself, had thought that Xander had been killed as well.

"I didn't know he liked me," Xander told Willow.

"Of course Giles likes you!" Willow said. "I mean, who doesn't?"

"Me," Cordelia said.

"Except Cordelia?" Willow said, not missing a beat.

"And Wesley," Cordelia said, smugly.

"What did I ever do to him?" Xander protested, half-heartedly. "Yeah, I know. Fine."

"Still, it must have felt weird to see yourself die," Cordelia said.

"Yeah," Xander said.

He felt nauseated.

::

Even after Faith was told that she'd killed a DoppelXander, she stayed on their side. She hid out at Giles's place, and the Watcher's Council was making noises as if they finally believed that Giles had been right about the Ascension.

Everything would have been rosy, except that Angel and Buffy's relationship seemed to be rockier than ever. Buffy didn't want to admit it, but Xander could tell that she was suffering from a bad case of Prodigal Sister's Syndrome.

"Fatted calf always galls the good little Slayer who's stayed home and slayed, or do I mean slew?" Xander said one morning. He hadn't slept very well, so maybe he wasn't thinking as quickly as usual.

"Oh, you sound like Angel," Buffy frowned. "I didn't know you were so close to Faith."

"I'm not---I can just see your point," Xander protested. "Faith comes in from the wilderness and has all the intel on the Dark Side, and you still have to do your algebra homework."

"Yeah, too bad I didn't blow my SATs like some of us," Buffy said. "Or spend all my free time with my vampire twin."

Xander blinked. "Fine," he said, and grabbed his jacket. He hopped off the picnic table and walked through the trees.

"Xan---" Buffy called, half-heartedly.

He walked off campus, and soon found himself walking down Crawford. I'll just go get my comic books, he thought. I'll go in through that broken glass door.

The door opened for him, though, as, apparently, Angel was awake. He backed up behind the door, and then closed it.

They stood staring at each other. Angel was wearing a tee shirt and drawstring pajama bottoms, his hair ruffled and his eyes puffy with sleep.

"I thought you'd be dead to the world," Xander said. "So to speak?"

"So you wanted to sneak up on me?" Angel said.

"I wanted my comics," Xander said.

"Oh," Angel said. He turned away. "They're where he left them."

Xander stood, irresolute, his hands in his pockets. "I haven't slept," he said. "I keep thinking about him."

"Yeah," Angel said. He straightened his shoulders. "You saw yourself get---"

"No," Xander said. "I saw him die. I saw him die to save you. Why did he do that? He was evil. Why did he do that?"

"I don't know," Angel said. He yawned, and rubbed his hands together.

"He saved you," Xander said. "And he saved Faith, too, I guess."

"He saved you, too," Angel said.

"But he was evil, " Xander repeated. "He was evil, but he liked you. He liked us."

"I know," Angel said gently.

Xander's eyes burned and his head hurt. "I miss him," he said. "What is that? He was a vampire and I hate vampires. I hate vampires. I hate you. "

"I know you do," Angel said. "It's okay. I know you hate me. I don't blame you." He gave Xander a strained smile. "I miss him, too."

Xander ran his hand under his nose. "I didn't mean that," he muttered.

"It's okay," Angel said. "Look, it's okay."

"Then, why am I crying?" Xander asked, and groped in his pocket for something to wipe up with. All the bones in his face hurt.

"Come here," Angel said, and took his elbow. He led Xander a few steps into another room, and Xander realized they were in a walk-through bathroom. Angel wet a washcloth and handed it to Xander.

"Vampires need to go to the bathroom?" Xander said hoarsely, wiping his face. It didn't help. He glanced up, and saw the bed, just beyond the door.

One side of Angel's mouth quirked up. "Not usually. We do take baths." He swayed a little and put one hand on the sink. "I'm half asleep," he said.

"Yeah, I know," Xander said. "I'm so tired I feel sick to my stomach." He contorted his face, trying not to sob.

Angel turned around, and stepped through the doorway. He sat down on the unmade bed, resting his forearms on his knees. "So am I," he said quietly.

Xander sat down next to him. "You miss him, too," he stated.

"Yeah," Angel said heavily. "He---he talked to me. I got used to him. He didn't---we didn't---it was like having a real friend."

"Who slept with you," Xander muttered.

Angel half-laughed. "I knew he'd tell you."

Xander nudged him in the ribs. "Well, of course. With the shackles. How could you resist repeating that?"

"Yeah," Angel said, unhappily. "He liked to weird me out."

Xander had the inexplicable urge to comfort him, and, as if in a dream, he put his arm around Angel's broad shoulders. Angel shivered a little. They leaned against each other for a while.

The old mansion was freezing, what with the over-grown trees and the thick curtains. Xander found himself shivering, too. He blinked. He had tightened his grip on Angel. "Look, I could---I could use a blanket. Come on. If we're going to be miserable, we may as well be warm." He let go of Angel, and kicked his shoes off before crawling backwards under the blankets.

Angel gaped at him. "What are you doing?" he said.

Xander pulled the soft cotton sheets and the thick comforter up. "Sleeping with you, I guess," he said, recklessly.

Angel picked up the edge of the comforter and slid beside him, warily. Xander grinned inwardly at his expression: like a good dog who couldn't believe that he got to sleep in bed with the people.

(What had the other one called him? Puppy?)

"So, what did Dead Me do?" Xander asked lightly, although his heart pounded and Angel could no doubt hear it.

"That," Angel said. "But he wasn't warm." He was speaking in the low voice Xander had heard him use with Buffy. It was weirdly cozy, lying in bed in the middle of the day, after two nights of insomnia. Lying in bed with Angel.

Xander turned on his side, and deliberately put one arm around Angel's waist.

Angel sighed, his eyes closing. Sleep overtook Xander and mugged him, and nothing else happened that night, but that was how it all started.

Oh, man. You made me *cry*.

Xander's eyes burned and his head hurt. "I miss him," he said. "What is that? He was a vampire and I hate vampires. I hate vampires. I hate you. "

Now that's a perfect ending -- "how it all started."

So glad that Vamp!Xander didn't get a soul, or become a truly good guy. I think his demise was the absolutely right solution to the story. I did love him, though. One of the reasons why:

"Again with the promises," Dead Xan Walking said. He winked at Xander.

Angel took one of his unnecessary breathes and exhaled through his nose.

Later on with our live Xander, I love this: Xander grinned inwardly at his expression: like a good dog who couldn't believe that he got to sleep in bed with the people.

The whole story is one of my favorite Xander/Angel stories.

I'll have to put it in my Memories under Xander/Angel, now---I couldn't decide how I was going to end it!

Adorable.

Oh, lovely. Just lovely. I just read all the parts, and I enjoyed it throughout. It was so well *crafted*, and your vamp!Xander was utterly real and believable. I loved the Xander/Xander interaction. And the making out with Larry! Just, all of it, but especially the ending. The two of them cuddling in shared grief was just so perfect an ending.

That's so lovely! I wish we'd gotten to keep vampXander, because yeah, I miss him already -- but what a moving finish. I utterly believe that vampXander, who has no reason to resent Angel, would be able to show our Xander the way to him.

Oh, and, as usual, even if I liked Angel for no other reason, I'd have fallen in love with him because of your descriptions:

Xander grinned inwardly at his expression: like a good dog who couldn't believe that he got to sleep in bed with the people.

So true. Booth has that look in bed too. And a scene last year where Booth and Angela see each other and beam happily, like they just remembered something really cool -- hey, she/he exists, and isn't that neat? Mmmm, so warm.

That fic is so adorable, I could totally see those two together. Know why is it that Angel could get along with vamp Xander but not Spike? Oh well must be like oil and water neither of them mix.

Must have a sequel. There is so much more to do with these two. great ending to these story but it leaves more to be desired like are they going to be together or not and if they do how are they go to get around the curse on Angel. OOOHH. There has to be more. Please tell us there is going to be a sequel. Pretty please with sugar on top, ice cream in the middle, and topped with chocolate syrup and a cherry.

Oh lord. Oh god. He *sob* DIED. Of course, he went out the way he wanted, but he DIED! *sob*

And Xander and the mutual comforting and Angel liking the Xander part of dead Xander and the bed... *happy sob*

And that last line just leaves me thinking happy, happy thoughts. God, I really adore this!

Why, thanks! I procrastinated about finishing it because I knew I was going to have to kill off V!X, you know. I've been wanting to do Xander/Angel at that time (I mean, aside from the human AU).

It's totally your fault that I'm having images of Xander/Angel/Vamp!xander in a hot threesome. Evil, evil writer!

Lovely fic! It's an interesting premise to see that xander is a less viscious vampire than Willow. It would have been cool if the both vampire willow and xander had come to Sunnydale instead of just willow.
